Cesaria Evora, Queen of “Morna”
Thursday, December 22nd, 2011Cesaria Evora, a vocalist who sang in the morna style, died on Saturday, Dec. 17, at the age of 70. From the Cape Verde islands off Senegal, she embraced a style of singing that was influenced by the Portuguese colonial legacy but also mingled with African influences as well. Evora grew up impoverished and sang most of her life for a living, but found fame only in her later years. With her deep contralto voice, she sang of love and longing and deep sorrow, in her slow, measured pace. Cesaria Evora always performed barefoot, to show solidarity with the poor women of her country and was called the Barefoot Diva. HCPL is fortunate to have two of her recordings: Voz d’amor and Sao Vicente. For a soulful treat, check them out.
