I completely agree about making or breaking the story. I have had a couple audiobooks that I discarded because the reader was horrible. They need to show enthusiasm when reading a book.

Linda:

I wonder if you read Michael Dirda's review of this book and : WHEN I AM PLAYING WITH MY CAT, HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT SHE IS NOT PLAYING WITH ME? Montaigne and Being in Touch with Life By
Saul Frampton? It was in the Washington Post a couple of weeks ago.
I hope the County purchases at least one copy of the latter work.

Good wishes.
James K.

I really enjoyed "The Lonely Polygamist." I picked it up on a whim when I needed a book to listen to on a trip. The reader did a good job as well.

Great picks for the science fiction readers, thank you! One more I'd add to the list is a book by author Leonid Korogodski called Pink Noise: A Posthuman Tale. I would have never believed that a book could have more ideas per word than Charles Stross’ writing. But this one does. And what ideas! This book is an eye-opener.

When you're done with Monk and Thomas Pitt, try Perry's WWI series. The series is wonderfully done.

If you like short stories, you may want to read Lee Smith's "Mrs. Darcy and the Blue-eyed Stranger." Some of the stories are a little sad, and some are funny, but most of them are satisfying for a hot summer day.

Hey, how funny. I was at our library this afternoon (picking up a book someone recommended on a blog last week! I love that -- plus a "from the Kitchen of Julia Child," as I was inspired by the recent movie) and came across a display of "Books with Bytes." Obviously all had to do with computers. So I patiently waited inline (and believe me, time has been in short supply today) to recommend the librarian find a Jeffrey Deaver book, called "The Blue Nowhere," (www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0671042262/stopyourekilling). It's a great code/ciphers thriller.

My current thriller, Three Kisses, isn't "The Blue Nowhere," but as 9/11 is tomorrow, and this thriller is based, so to speak on actual current events, with al Qaeda and international terrorism and the Midle East, etc., I wanted to recommend it. It made reading and understanding current geopolitical events much more understandable and enjoyable.
